Huron John - Indigo Jack & The New World Border
Album Review
Huron John’s third album “Indigo Jack & The New World Border” sees John at his Salvation Mountain peak with this new sound. I’ve been a big fan of John’s work since 2020, when I was first introduced to “Motocross”, off his first album, which led to be one of my favorite songs of all time. Throughout listening to his two albums, and a few deep cuts from early in his discography, I always knew there was something big coming. I enjoyed his work, but I always felt like there could be something more. IJATNWB is the more. John released this project in two parts, and while I was able to listen to the first seven initial tracks, they didn’t do much for me. That, was until I was able to listen to the whole project. Adding so much context and atmosphere is something that disc one wasn’t able to convey. The songs are laced with beautiful instrumentation, some of the most refreshing production, and John’s best writing to date. This is the perfect music to listen to on a road trip, or even while dancing. So much jazz, funk, synth pop, and a whirl of different genre blends. I had been keeping up to date on John’s process through this project, and the way that he would describe his new sound was really enticing. It really does feel like a new wave for him, and I think there’s only up from here. I will say, at certain points songs need growing for me, and some songs could be shorter, while other’s are criminally too short. Regardless, this will definitely be high up on my end of the year list.
